What a place to wind down, on this island paradise just a stone’s throw from Auckland.
We stay for three nights in our hotel right across the road from Onetangi Beach and spend the week exploring coastal headlands, tasting wine and enjoying meals at the many vineyards. It’s no wonder that Waiheke has been voted as ‘Auckland’s Best Day Out.’
Itinerary
Day 1
We travel to the Auckland Ferry Terminal to catch the ferry to Waiheke. On arrival, we tour along the scenic northern route, taking in the spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf and beyond to the Coromandel Peninsula. We enjoy a platter style lunch at Stonyridge Vineyard and even enjoy some wine tasting as well. This is a relaxing location, set amongst vines and an olive grove. After lunch, we head to our hotel at Onetangi Beach where we can we can relax at our beachfront location.
Day 2
This morning, we go on a full day tour of the eastern end of the island. We start off at Dead Dog Bay Garden where we go on a guided walk and view the sculptures. We go for a scenic drive around ‘The Loop’ road with its stunning views over the surrounding islands, rolling vineyards and farmland. For lunch, we enjoy wine tasting and a platter lunch at Man O’War Vineyard.
Day 3
Today, we visit Rangihoua Estate where the first Olive Oil in the North Island was produced. We take a gentle costal walk around The Esplanade which overlooks Hurihi Bay. Our next stop is Whittaker’s Musical Museum and Art Gallery. This is a unique museum with over 100 instruments, all of which can be played by the owners. We’re dropped off in Oneroa Village for lunch and the rest of the afternoon is free to look around the village or nearby Ostend.
Day 4
This morning, we board the ferry to go back to Auckland and make our way home.
